If Joe Straus becomes speaker....

Liberal Republican Joe Straus.  Yes, I said it.  If you vote for 3rd trimester abortions, for casino gambling, and for fiscally irresponsible legislation, then you are a liberal.  Sorry, Joe.

As it stands, conservatives have to choose, quickly, if they're going to back Craddick or another candidate (Gattis or possibly Smithee if he joins the race come Monday).  They need to rally strongly behind whomever they choose.  They cannot afford to be split on the issue.

64 Democrats, and the 11 ABC Republicans who gathered today, could likely make the choice for speaker, and Joe Straus is their declared consensus candidate.  Just think, if we had been able to retain some key conservatives who lost their seats this last go-round, if Republicans had a more decisive majority than just 76-74, we might not be having this debate.  We might be able to guarantee a conservative successor to Tom Craddick.

So who is to blame for the weakness of conservative Republicans in the House?

Um, excuse me, you may be right on the abortion part, but those of us who are Republicans and support fiscal conservatism, and casino gambling are actually known as LIBERTARIANS!!

Big difference between Liberal Republican Nanny-Stater big government types, and us limited government libertarian Republicans.

Please do try to get that straight next time.

Joe Straus voted for CHIP expansion and for Perry's cancer bill - those are NOT examples of fiscal conservatism. And I'm shocked that libertarians would be fine with those things, just because Straus also voted with them on gambling legislation.

I wasn't aware that libertarians universally supported abortion, either, or government money going to family planning services.

So when did Libertarians support start supporting tax increases, expanded government, local spending increases for transportation for the sole purpose of attracting more federal pork projects, and kowtowing to Democrats?

I heard many Libertarians say in the election this year that their goal is to eliminate the Republican Party. Well, in doing so, you are effectively allowing Democrats to rule the roost, which includes the vast expansion of government and tax increases to pay for it. The Democrat leadership in Texas has made it clear that their goal is to create a statewide income tax, on top of the taxes that are in place.

The best Libertarians could hope for is what we got. A country club Rockerfeller Republican in charge of the Texas House who will empower Democrats, all in the name of "change" and "voting your district."

Misinformed, unprincipled Libertarians do nothing to actually promote their values. They only work to empower liberal Democrats.
